ROAMERS JOURNAL

Why I Returned to ROAMERS

By Dominique Luchart Creator of the Newdawn Universe

Some stories don’t stay silent once you’ve put them down. ROAMERS kept calling me back.

I began building the world that became Newdawn back in 2009 doing research — not just as a story, but as a way of thinking through where I believed technology, governance, and human choice might actually take us. The project grew. It inspired me to write Newdawn. Over more than a decade of work across film, coaching actors, and strategic foresight, that world kept growing, even during the years I wasn’t actively writing inside it. By the time I sat back down with the original ROAMERS manuscript, I knew almost immediately that the version I’d written years earlier didn’t yet hold everything the story actually needed to say.

What was missing

The original book told Tesh’s story starting close to where the real stakes begin. But the years before that — her childhood, her selection for the Institute, the specific costs of what Sloan’s training actually did to her, the slow way her found family became the thing that kept her whole — all of that lived only in outline, in notes, in the parts of the story I understood but had never fully written down. In that moment, I knew I had to expand this archive edition not just to Roamers but to Central as well, carrying the lives of the roamers in Ang in their travel into the past. Returning to the manuscript meant an honest choice: leave that material as background I carried in my head, or do the harder work of actually building it into the book and series. So when you pick up this expanded edition of Roamers know that Central is not far behind with an early 2027 release.

I chose the harder work. Ten new chapters. A restructured book. Insights into the earlier years of Tesh at the Institute giving you a new perspective on who she is and how her team became her family. These new chapters add significant moments about each character and Tesh’s relationship to each one.  I integrated these into the story you know, weaving them so that they fit into the timeline naturally. And now, they belong, I believe to enhance the parts of Newdawn where characters grow. Every chapter got moments of brainstorming, checking every beat against what I wanted to add so it meant a deeper experience if this was possible.

A 25-year development story, finally on the page

I’ve spent more than two decades working across film production, acting instruction, and strategic foresight — and Newdawn has, in its own way, absorbed all of it. The Author’s Archive Expanded Edition isn’t just a longer book. It’s the version of ROAMERS that finally has room for everything I originally meant this world to hold, and there is still more to come.

Why now

Because the story was ready, and because I was ready to give it the time it actually needed. ROAMERS was always meant to be the opening chapter of something larger — the Newdawn Saga, and the Newdawn Universe underneath it. This edition is the foundation that the rest of it gets built on because the world has expanded and to do it justice the novels have to also. Now that I am writing daily again, there will be other announcements surrounding this work within the Newdawn Universe.

I hope you find in it what I found going back to write it: a story that was always more than it first appeared to be.
